Is Grain Free Dog Food Really Causing Heart Diseases? The US Food and Drug Administration investigates grain free pet foods!

Earlier this month, the U.S FDA launched a nationwide investigation after receiving an increasing number of reports linking dogs with a heart disease to a common grain free dog food diets.

Grain free dog food is mainly composed of: Bison, sweet potato, chickpeas, lentils and other legumes. They are the main ingredients of grain free dog food.

They are often sold as “grain free” to appeal to health-conscious dog owners who sometimes pay a lot of money for such dog foods.

The many health benefits of grain free dog food for canines made it one of the most popular dog foods. According to the Telegraph:

“Research published earlier this year showed that “natural” pet food now makes up more than a third of the UK’s £940m industry. While grain free dog food accounted for 15 percent”.

However, this popular dog food is lately suspicioned to be causing a heart disease that is called Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). This link was noticed by the U.S Food & Drug  Association after vets across the US began reporting a rising number of small dogs suffering from DCM.

Such a link has not been confirmed, yet, and no recalls have been issued. The FDA is already investigating after receiving troubling reports of DCM in dogs that had been fed grain free food.

Not only the U.S FDA is taking precautions against such problem. The UK’s Pet Food Manufacturing Association confirmed to the Telegraph it is “closely monitoring” the US investigation.
