Story
- I adopted a dog who had been abused and was very fearful. Her name was Missy and she came from the ASPCA. The first time she came home with me, she ran away. She hid under my bed for three days but then finally let me come near her—and now we are inseparable!
- I adopted another dog who was blind because he had been hit by a car when he was just a puppy; his name is Moses. He adapted so well to being blind that it has never affected him negatively in any way! It’s amazing how resilient animals can be when given love and patience, isn’t it?

Animal Haven is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for abandoned cats and dogs throughout the Tri-State area, and provides behavior intervention when needed to improve chances of adoption. Founded in 1967, we operate an open-admissions animal shelter and adopt out more than 1,000 dogs and cats each year. Our mission is to find homes with kind people who will love them forever.
The adoption process begins when you fill out an application on our website or in person at our shelter (22 East 125th Street). If your application is approved by staff, you will be invited to meet the dog or cat of your choice. That’s when we discuss everything from how much time you have available for exercise walks each day (our animals need lots!) to what household members have allergies or health issues that could affect their life with a new pet. If all goes well during this meeting, one of our volunteers will bring your new friend for home visits so you can confirm that this animal is right for you!
