Help Dogs Go Green

Introduction

I love my dog. He’s my best friend and I take him with me everywhere. But like all of us, he can be a little resource-intensive! I don’t want to contribute to the waste produced by our canine friends, so I am trying to make sure that everything I do is green and sustainable. In this blog post we’ll look at how you can help your dog go green too!

Buy Local Pet Products

  • Buy local.
  • Support local businesses.
  • Support the community.

It’s important to support your own community in many ways, including buying products made locally. Many people don’t realize that manufacturing can be a dirty business—especially when it comes to pet products, which are often made overseas with questionable material and labor practices. When you buy from sources near your home, you can help reduce the carbon footprint by not having those products shipped across the world before reaching you and your furry friend (or friends). Even better? When you buy from an independent business owner who lives in your area, that money stays in town and helps keep our economy strong!

Ditch Disposable Poop Bags

Disposable poop bags are bad for the environment and your wallet. They’re made from petroleum-based plastic, which is harmful to the earth and not good for you or your dog. When you buy disposable poop bags, you are paying for more than just a bag; you’re also paying for all the resources that go into making it.

Reusable doggy bags are much better for our planet and our bank accounts. They’re also good at cleaning up after your pup—just throw them in with some water, rub them together really fast like a washcloth (or use a brush), rinse off any remaining residue with clean water and hang them to dry. You can reuse them over and over again until they fall apart!

Recycle E-Waste

Recycling electronic waste, or e-waste, is a great way to help the planet and avoid putting your dog at risk for ingesting toxic chemicals. E-waste is anything that has a battery or electrical cord attached to it. These items include cell phones, laptops and other portable electronics; televisions; microwaves; computers; printers; fax machines; video game consoles and controllers; VCRs/DVD players/recorders (all of these devices use VHS tapes which can be sold); power tools like drills or screwdrivers with rechargeable batteries (make sure you remove those old batteries first!).

Before recycling an item make sure it’s not still working by connecting the power cord or turning on your device if applicable. If you don’t see any lights turn on then it may no longer be useful!

If you have an old phone laying around somewhere head over to Call2Recycle where they will recycle any kind of battery operated device as long as its under 7 pounds heavy (otherwise shipping costs would make this service cost prohibitive). You can also donate any nonworking electronic equipment such as keyboards and mice from your computer but keep in mind that without functioning parts some organizations may not accept donations at all!

Choose Eco-Friendly Toys

As you are doing your research on eco-friendly toys, it’s important to remember that not all dog toys are created equal. It may seem easy to just buy the cheapest toy, but if you want your dog or pup to be healthy and happy, you’re going to have to spend a little more money.

If you can avoid plastics, toxic chemicals and other materials that could harm your furry friend, do so. Instead look for natural fibers like cotton and hemp; wood toys; rubber bones (think Kong); biodegradable materials—and anything else made in the USA from recycled materials is ideal.

Clean With Green Cleaners

Green cleaners are safe for your dog, and they’re better for the environment. Vinegar and baking soda make a great all-natural cleaner, but you can also purchase green cleaners online or at your local pet store (look for ones that are specifically formulated for pets).

Avoid using harsh chemicals when you clean—this is especially important with carpets because of how much time dogs spend on them. A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter will help reduce airborne allergens in your home and provide extra protection from harmful chemicals as well.

Switch to a Rain Barrel

It is no surprise that dogs love to play in the rain. But did you know that rain barrels can help your dog and the planet? Rain barrels collect rainwater from your roof, which can be used for watering plants and lawns, or even for drinking. This reduces storm water runoff by slowing down the flow of water into rivers and streams during storms. Also, rain barrels help reduce wastewater treatment costs because less water is being sent to the sewer system each year!

In addition to these benefits, collecting rainwater also means less need for irrigation and drinking water! So next time it rains outside (which hopefully will be soon), check out this guide on how to build your own DIY rain barrel!

Plant Indiginous Plants

Plant indigenous plants.

This is a no brainer, right? Of course you should be planting native plants in your garden! Native plants are better suited to local climates and soil conditions, so they require less maintenance. They also attract native wildlife, which means that they’re more likely to help keep your garden pest-free! Native plants provide a safe haven for bees and other pollinators, who need food sources in order to survive. The simple act of planting native flowers and shrubs on your property can make all the difference when it comes to helping protect our environment from climate change-related disasters like wildfires or droughts by providing habitat for animals that would otherwise struggle through these difficult times without any resources available near their homes.

Help your dogs help the planet!

You’ve heard it before, but dogs are part of the family—and that means they should be treated well. By working with your local government to make changes to your city that help dogs and the environment, you can make sure that both are healthy and happy. If you’re looking for ways to start going green for your dog, check out these tips!

  • Use eco-friendly materials when possible
  • Recycle whenever possible
  • Make sure there’s enough space in your home or apartment so everyone can live comfortably
