Introduction
Before you adopt a retired racing greyhound, I want to tell you more about myself and what my life has been like. You will find me in foster care at the Greyhound Adoption Center of Maryland, where I am waiting for the right family to come along and give me the forever home I deserve. My foster parents have told me that there are many reasons why people might want to adopt a greyhound, but living with another dog is not one of them. That’s fine by me since my ideal family includes a good amount of running, playing and romping around!
E-mail is sometimes a better way to reach me.
- Email is not always a good way to contact me. I get a lot of emails, and they can be lost or overlooked.
- Email is not the best way to reach me if you want to talk about adopting a greyhound. Since so many people are interested in adopting and there are only so many hounds available for adoption, it’s important for us to keep track of what each person has already been told about the process, as well as their specific situation. This doesn’t happen unless we talk on the phone or meet in person!
I love to take rides in the car, but you must be mindful of my medical condition.
As a retired racer, I’m used to being in the back of a car for long periods of time. However, there are some things you need to know about me:
- I am not a good candidate for long car rides (unless it’s in my crate).
- If I am traveling in your vehicle and need to stop for any reason, please be mindful of my medical condition. If possible, pull over somewhere safe where there are no cars coming towards us or behind us. Do not park on the side of the road!
- If you plan on taking me out in public places such as restaurants or stores while we’re out together, please don’t leave me alone in your car unattended until you return. There have been incidents where greyhounds have been stolen by thieves who see them as easy targets because they look smaller than other breeds and can fit into small spaces like trunks.*
If you would like more information about my adoption process or would like to meet with me at one of our adoption events please contact [the name of his adoption coordinator] .
I’m happiest when I get to run, play and romp.
I’m happiest when I get to run, play and romp. I love to run and then pull a big ball back to you. Then we can play tug of war with my favorite toy. After that, I like to romp around the yard chasing each other until someone gets tired!
I was a racing greyhound and am used to getting along with other greyhounds.
I’m used to living with other greyhounds, so I’ll be a great addition to your home! I also am used to living with cats and dogs. I was a racing dog, so hopefully you will keep me busy when you are not at work or sleeping (and sometimes sleeping is good!). As long as there’s someone who understands how much fun it is to chase squirrels around the yard, I think we’ll get along just fine!
My ideal family takes walks with me every day.
Walking is a fun way to get exercise and be with your dog. It can also be done any time of day, even in the winter!
If you’re looking for a new family member, consider adopting one of our greyhounds. We have plenty of sweet dogs waiting for their forever homes.
I’m happiest living with another greyhound, or another medium-size dog weighing up to 45 pounds.
I’m happiest living with another greyhound, or another medium-size dog weighing up to 45 pounds. I love to play with other dogs and get along with most any dog my size or larger. I’m very gentle with small dogs and will do my best not to knock them over.
I’ve lived in a home with cats before and was respectful of them at all times. However, if the cat is scared of me and backs away from me while I am eating (which they sometimes do) then I will stop eating until they feel safe again, which takes about 10 seconds!
Here’s where I’d prefer not to live.
- No apartments
- No homes with small children (under 10 years old)
- No homes with dogs smaller than 45 pounds
- No pets other than greyhounds (no cats, birds, hamsters, gerbils etc.)
