What is a Pet Insurance Calculator?
A pet insurance quote is three numbers and a price: a deductible, a reimbursement percentage, an annual limit and a monthly premium. This calculator turns them into money for a given year of vet bills, so you can see what the policy does in a quiet year and in a bad one.
It does not recommend an insurer or a policy. It shows the arithmetic, so the decision is yours.

How does a pet insurance payout work?
On a typical accident-and-illness policy, you pay the vet, then claim. The annual deductible comes off the year's eligible bills first; the insurer then reimburses its percentage (often 70, 80 or 90 percent) of what is left, up to any annual limit. This calculator does that arithmetic for a year of bills.
What is the break-even vet bill?
The year's eligible vet bills at which having insurance and not having it cost you the same. It works out as the year's premiums divided by the reimbursement share, plus the deductible. In a year with bills above it, the policy came out ahead; below it, the premiums cost more than the policy paid back.
Does this tell me whether to buy pet insurance?
Not on its own. On average a policy pays out less than it collects, which is how insurers stay in business. Insurance is for the bad year: the question is whether you could pay a large, sudden bill from savings. Try a quiet year and a bad one here, and weigh them against your own savings.
What does this calculator leave out?
What your policy counts as eligible. Exam fees, pre-existing conditions, waiting periods, breed-specific exclusions and per-condition deductibles vary between policies, and premiums usually rise as a pet ages. Read the policy document; it decides.
