What is Nose of Tralee?
The Nose of Tralee competition is an annual event that invites pet owners from all over the island of Ireland to submit photos and stories of their pets. The goal is to find the most lovable and endearing pet, with the winner being crowned the Nose of Tralee. The competition has been running for 12 years, and this year, Binx has made history by becoming the first representative from Co Armagh.
Binx’s Story
Binx, a three-year-old Golden Retriever, has been selected from over 1,550 entries as one of the 32 finalists. His owner, Ruth Parkes, entered the competition for a bit of fun and never expected to make it this far. Ruth said, “I entered the competition for a bit of fun, but I never thought we would get so far. It would be great to bring it home for the county.”
Binx has an infectious personality and loves giving cuddles. He is always smiling and wants attention, making him a social butterfly. Ruth described him as having a “big heart with a very calming presence,” which makes him a perfect therapy dog.
Binx’s Therapy Work
Binx is currently undertaking pet gundog training classes and has recently qualified as a therapy dog with the charity Therapy Dogs Nationwide (TDN). Ruth said, “This is something that has been on my heart for a while, as seeing the love Binx has for people, and them him, I thought it would be a great opportunity to give something back to the people of Co Armagh and help people who may be feeling lonely and struggling with their mental health.”
Binx and Ruth are hoping to get involved with the Bark and read programme, which involves bringing therapy dogs into schools to help children develop their literacy skills and build confidence. Ruth said, “As someone who loves reading, this is a big passion of mine to help develop a love of reading amongst the younger generations and to spend time at their local library.”
What’s Next for Binx?
Voting in the Nose of Tralee competition opens on July 24, until 5pm on the August 18, with the winner being announced on August 19. Binx and Ruth are excited to see how the public will respond to their story and are hoping to make a difference in their community.
