CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Pet Helpers is bursting at the seams, and while the puppies and dogs may be adorable, the shelter is facing a serious crisis.

The shelter is currently housing 25 animals, with more arriving daily, resulting in a dire need for adoption and support. A recent announcement has been made by Pet Helpers to launch an emergency campaign called “Crowded with Cuteness” to help find homes fast for these adorable animals.

The Problem

The surge in animal intakes is being driven by a combination of factors:

  • Financial hardships
  • Unplanned litters
  • Lack of microchipping

“Every inch of space we can safely use, we’re using,” said JJ Steele, Pet Helpers Director of Marketing. “We’re standing in our administrative office right now, and it’s become a pop-up kennel. We’re doubling up dogs in kennels that are meant for one. But we won’t turn animals away, we’re doing everything we can to keep them safe and cared for.”
The crisis has brought forth an overwhelming sense of compassion and urgency among the staff and volunteers at Pet Helpers. JJ Steele emphasized that the shelter is more than just a place of refuge for animals, but also a community that provides essential services such as pet food banks, discounted medicine, and emergency medical funds.

A Lifeline

The “Crowded with Cuteness” campaign is a vital lifeline that aims to alleviate the overcrowding crisis at Pet Helpers. During the campaign period, from April 23 through April 28, the shelter will offer 50% off adoption fees for all adult dogs and puppies to help find homes fast. This initiative not only supports the immediate needs of the animals but also encourages long-term solutions to the shelter’s capacity issues. “Every animal we can keep in their home frees up space at the shelter,” said JJ Steele. “This isn’t just about making space; it’s about saving lives. We have an agreement with Charleston County to fund and build new kennel spaces, but construction and permitting will take time. Until then, this campaign is a vital lifeline for the animals in our care.”

A Mission to Save Lives
